Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Assumes Charge as IAF’s 51st Vice Chief of Air Staff

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit has taken charge as the 51st Vice Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He assumes the position at a critical juncture as the IAF intensifies modernisation efforts and expands operational reach across the Indo-Pacific.

The Vice Chief of Air Staff serves as the senior-most operational and administrative officer after the Chief of Air Staff, overseeing force development, capability enhancement, and strategic planning. The appointment reflects the IAF’s leadership transition cycle and succession management within the senior command structure.

Air Marshal Dixit brings extensive operational experience from a career spanning multiple command postings and staff positions within the IAF. Officers assuming the Vice Chief role typically have backgrounds in fighter operations, strategic planning, or air defence systems, depending on the service’s current operational priorities.

The timing of the appointment coincides with the IAF’s ongoing induction of advanced platforms including the Rafale fighter jets, indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas variants, and the development of the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system. The Air Force is also managing a substantial inventory upgrade programme across its transport, helicopter, and airborne early warning fleets.

The Vice Chief’s role traditionally encompasses oversight of operational readiness across the IAF’s three operational commands: Western Air Command, Eastern Air Command, and Southern Air Command. Strategic priorities under the Vice Chief’s purview include enhancing air superiority capability along the northern and eastern borders, strengthening maritime patrol operations, and coordinating with the Navy on integrated air defence.

The IAF currently operates around 1,700 combat aircraft across multiple platforms including MiG-29s, Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, and indigenous Tejas variants. With an authorised strength exceeding 127,000 personnel, the Air Force’s senior leadership manages complex modernisation timelines while maintaining operational commitments across India’s air space.

Air Marshal Dixit’s appointment also reflects the IAF’s focus on enhancing interoperability with allied air forces through exercises such as Exercise Cope India and Talon series conducted with the United States, as well as bilateral engagements with the air forces of Japan, France, and Australia.
