Adani Boosts Defence Manufacturing, Says India Will Soon End Ammunition Imports

The company accelerates production across small, medium, and large-calibre ammunition as part of its self-reliance push.

Adani Defence & Aerospace has intensified its expansion in ammunition manufacturing, stating that India may no longer need to rely on ammunition imports in the near future. The company’s growing facilities, especially its advanced plant in Kanpur, are at the centre of this rapid scale-up.

According to senior officials, Adani is significantly enhancing production of small-calibre ammunition and has also begun extensive work on medium and large-calibre rounds. The company’s manufacturing lines are being upgraded with automated systems, advanced inspection technologies, and high-precision tooling to ensure consistency and meet global defence standards.

A major part of the company’s roadmap involves localisation of components that India has traditionally imported. This includes crucial items such as primers and propellants. Adani is setting up dedicated units to produce these materials domestically, which will further reduce dependency on external suppliers and strengthen the national defence supply chain.

The company has also announced substantial investments across its ammunition and defence ecosystem. With new capacities coming online, Adani expects to meet a large portion of India’s annual ammunition requirements, including for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Officials believe that once the production hits full scale, the country could reach a point where routine ammunition imports are no longer needed.

Adani’s management emphasised that this expansion aligns with India’s long-term goal of defence self-reliance. By ramping up indigenous manufacturing, the company aims to support the armed forces with reliable supplies while positioning India as a competitive player in the global defence market.
